Nick Hakim Releases ‘Cometa’.
Written by: Eva Lynch
Nick Hakim is a brooklyn-based singer, songwriter and producer known for his soft yet soulful voice. Cometa is his 3rd full-length album, and seems to take Hakim on a more experimental within R&B.
His soft instrumentals on tracks such as “Happen,” feel almost reminiscent of early 2000s soft-rock, and showcase his vocals. There are some more upbeat tunes as well, such as “Feeling Myself” and “Only One” which plays with new rhythms and builds up the energy, adding some funk to his R&B. He has such control over his voice and knows how to simply wrap you up in his smooth tones. My recommendations for songs which reek with comfort and feel like early love, are: “Vertigo” and “Slide Under.”
The layering of his whispered voice gives the album an intimate feel and the slowed down melodies make the album feel immediately familiar, similar to his early songs such as “QADIR,” Heaven” and “I Don’t Know,” which are personal favourites.
In its press release, the album is represented as a collection of romantic songs that aim to emulate the way falling in love made him feel like he was floating, through the buzzy and dizzying control which characterizes Hakim’s style.
