Interview with Kate Gillespie.

Your latest single “On The Floor” is a slower track. Can we expect that from your future releases?
My future releases will be within the same wheelhouse genre-wise, but I do have a couple upbeat tracks in the works that touch on some happy and sassier subject matters.
How has your experience in Nashville impacted your songwriting process?
My experience in Nashville has given me the ability to enjoy writing with other musicians and branching out with the genres I write. Overall I feel that I write better songs on my own, but Nashville’s community-like nature has allowed me to be comfortable collaborating and make songwriting a shared experience that can lead to some great friendships, in addition to great songs.
You have a good grasp on Folk/Americana music. Do you think things like Taylor Swift’s folklore have pushed your genre?
I don’t think folklore has pushed any sonic boundaries in the folk/Americana world, but I certainly think it’s given the genre a wider reach. In my case, I didn’t really know the Folk/Americana genre existed until I moved to Nashville and heard it through my friends, and instantly fell in love with it. I’d imagine many have had that experience with folklore and evermore.
What challenges did you see when trying to create music during the pandemic?
While overall making music during the pandemic has been more accessible, I know I’m not alone in feeling that it can actually be more difficult when you have more free time. All of the empty space can make it difficult to feel creative, and all of the extra time adds pressure if you’re not using that time to create. And while I have been writing a ton in the last couple of months, and I’m happy to say I’ve made some of my favourite song yet, the year overall has been a bit slow moving train.
It looks like we can expect more new music soon, can you tell us more about your new tracks?
My new tracks feature my first ever breakup songs that don’t hold any anger! I’ve recently gone through a very amicable breakup, and it’s been a huge life change but mostly in positive ways. Normalize breakup songs that don’t always roast your ex, I guess?
We love to feature new and upcoming artists, who are your favorites at the moment?
My favourite artist of the year has been Adam Melchor, and a couple other that come close are my Nashville friends Katy Kirby and Katy Pruitt. All incredible indie/folk/Americana up ‘n comers!
