Laval, QC @ Place Bell
Gearing up to a night full of pop nostalgia, fans traveled to Laval’s Place Bell on a Wednesday night to see Wallows, supported by BENEE. The venue was cut in half but the room was packed.
The night started off early with BENEE. The New Zealand pop artist made her return to Quebec after her headline show in May of 2022, and the audience was hooked. Either they were singing along to every verse, or discovering their new favourite singer - there was no in between. She and her two member band played tunes off of her album Hey u x and new singles “Green Honda”, and the popular quarantine hit “Supalonely”. Her energy was infectious.
Wallows and team have mastered the art of stage and show production, to say the least. Only a curtain with the band name was seen before their start and after Charli xcx’s “club classics”, it was dropped. This was to be followed with another curtain - this time, a white one. Fans yelled in unison once the lights were switched.
The use of lights, motion, and tension were specified during the beginning of their set. Lead Dylan Minnette’s silhouette was shown through the curtain while acoustically singing “Do Not Wait”, and slowly the rest of the group was teased as well. When instruments kicked in, lights flickered to give the impression that they were all shaking like a glitch - which made fans yell more. This was followed by the very last curtain falling, revealing the band playing “Your Apartment” off of their new record Model.
Throughout the night, the trio (Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, Cole Preston) and band played songs from their recent album, and past ones. Some songs included the famous “Are You Bored Yet? (featuring Clairo)” and a fan favourite “Pleaser”. The crowd knew they were in for a treat, but the night exceeded their already high expectations.
