From the moment JAWNY burst on stage, his energy was unparalleled. “Bursts” is a word that suits his style of performing, as he jumped around and sang with his entire soul. The crowd matched this enthusiasm, and the combined force led to truly magical results.
The American singer JAWNY (formerly known as Johnny Utah) performed at Petit Campus in Montreal on March 22nd. Though Petit Campus is a relatively small venue, the place was packed as it was entirely sold out. JAWNY, however, remained humble and continuously thanked his fans, telling us “you did this, not me”. This gratitude demonstrated a down-to-earth mentality that was refreshing and helped the crowd feel as though we were collectively partaking in the musical experience.
Speaking of music, JAWNY’s is just as fun and honest as he is. His setlist was the perfect rollercoaster of emotions, starting off with the high energy “strawberry chainsaw” before descending into more mellow tracks like “4Tounce” and then picking it right back up again. Highlights include the way the crowd danced their heart out to high energy tracks, and the surprise cover of “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift. His music is difficult to describe, as it blurs the lines between bedroom pop, indie funk, and more, yet it always features a unique melody and whimsical lyrics. You have to listen to it to fully understand, just as you had to be there on March 22nd.
At the show’s finale, the crowd erupted into a never ending cheer that could surely be heard from down the street—a true testament to the power of great music.
