Connection is a concept that feels all too fleeting over the past year, for many of us. We are clinging to digital channels in order to keep relationships afloat and relying on nostalgia to awaken our senses. Thankfully, new music releases are still here to aid listeners in building lost connections with artists, loved ones, and within one’s self.

Shallow Pools is doing their best to bring those special moments to life in their new single, “glow.” The song embarks on a journey to depict the instantaneous moment that sparks a tethering between two people. It’s more than cliche ‘love at first sight;’ there is an instant bond that pulls every ounce of you into the other’s eyes, there is a point where time stops & you become hyper-aware of what your senses are taking in, and there is a cinematic moment that forms. The lyrics of “glow” pull listeners into this narrative as if they are experiencing it for the very first time and ushers in deep-rooted nostalgia for when one has lived this through.

Beyond the song, Shallow Pools has created the perfect visual capsulation of true love between friends and partners alike. Set in their hometown of Boston, the music video for “glow” is an adventure from sunset to sunrise. Rooted in the comfort and joy that companionship brings, anyone who watches is destined to long for the days of running down the block holding hands, watching the stars rise above the skyline, and falling asleep on the shoulder of that special someone. It also becomes quite obvious, when viewing, that Shallow Pools is made up of four best friends actually taking on life hand in hand. More than that, the sweet moments stolen between Glynnis (vocals) + Jess (guitar) and Ali (drums) + Haley (bass) is enough to make the heart of any cynic melt into adoration of love.

With a LGBTQ+ love story for the ages and honest connection of friendship on the table, Shallow Pools rounds out the masterpiece of “glow” with their unique brand of instrumentations. The band has fully embraced their exploration of indie-pop; crafting not just this song, but a coming legacy of tunes to be danced to around the house or turned up to full volume at Sunday brunches (once they safely return as we once knew them). Incorporating synth heavy tones was daunting at times…

We had been wanting to write an uplifting song that was heavily influenced by 80’s pop, so “glow” came together very naturally for us. After being inspired by city lights and sounds, we decided to sample the sound of an orange line train in Boston. We built the song around the sample and incorporated city elements into the lyrics. The writing process gave us the confidence to experiment with synths and production in ways that we hadn’t before. The song feels a bit nostalgic to us now that we are deep into a pandemic, but we hope that it brings listeners some hope at the same time.

...however these ladies took the challenge of their inspiration and found success.

Building the piercing depiction of connection that we all so deeply crave and an enigmatic call to get up + dance, “glow” is a must listen for all music connoisseurs. Honing in on exactly who they are and what they are creating, Shallow Pools is paving their way to becoming a household name through this song and what is sure to come down the line.
