Sam MacPherson Touches on ‘Powerlines’ EP and Creative Process.

Written by Sammy Wrogé

Sam MacPherson recently released his EP, Powerlines and has started his first headline tour and he is excited to tell everyone ‘Thank you’.

The born and raised New Jersey, singer/songwriter was vulnerable in sharing about his new EP and work as an artist, just as he is in all his songs, especially, his song “Routine”, where he says when asked about that song, he has nothing more to say. “I think someone could listen to it and all of the territory that I wanted to cover is in the song. There are a few songs on Powerlines that are like that”, says Sam.

While Sam says he does not have a writing process as he never wants to force a good song into existence, but rather do anything he can to nurture a creative environment when it happens, he says being vulnerable is his starting place. He always strives to create honest and genuine music all based on true stories.

Sam — like many artists — is his worst critic. There are often many barriers in pursuing a career in the music industry. For Sam, his biggest was the perception of his own ability. “I wasn’t necessarily sure that I could do this as a job or that I was good enough to do it as a job…I think I just kind of didn’t look left or right, until I willed those things into existence”, says Sam. Even when he assumes something he writes is not great, if he keeps coming back to it, he knows something is there. The most inspiring thing about making music to Sam is gaining something that did not exist before he started writing. He realizes that his ability is infinite, and he feels successful and grateful in accomplishing and doing the things he has always wanted to do in song form.

With the recent release of his EP, Powerlines, Sam shares how the songs feel as though they had some type of congruent and connective tissue in them and how he is connected to all these moments, experiences, and people whether he wants to be or not.

“It’s about intrinsically having some type of tether to these moments and these people and

these places and these little vignettes of my life,” says Sam.

Since Sam is so deeply connected with these songs, it is no surprise that he still resonates with each song on his new EP so strongly and is looking forward to playing them all on tour. “I am absolutely most looking forward to meeting people and saying, ‘Thank you’ and singing songs for them and just wrapping my arms around a community that I think is there, but it’s hard to know until you’re all in the same room together.”

Sam hopes to leave people with a feeling of mutual understanding through his new EP and music he continues to share.
