A little over a year since their first album release, Quarters of Change is back with their second studio album, Portraits! The 11-song album is highly eclectic and displays a wide range of QOC sounds. Here are a few of our favourites:

The album opens with their single “What I Wanted,” which was released in early July of 2023. The song’s lyrics convey a sense of reflection and uncertainty and indicate a close or conflicted relationship with something dark or tempting, a contemplative state of mind followed by the reflection that what was initially desired or sought may not be what was ultimately wanted. The song reflects themes of self-discovery, reflection on past choices, and the realization that what one thought they wanted may not align with their true desires or needs. These themes set the tone for the album as they unveil this same story of self-reflection and discovery, I suppose, hence the album title “Portraits.”

“Depression II” acts as the sequel to their 2018 single “Depression,” and if you were a fan of that one, this song does not disappoint. A lot more hard-hitting and percussion-heavy, this song acts as the development to the much lighter, chiller track that was Depression ‘1’ from their Cyclone Trips EP.

Listed as their “Artist Pick” on Spotify, “Heaven Bound” has the more melodic-rock vibe that Quarters of Change fans recognize them for. Like Heaven Bound, Illogical Decisions, and Time Before Mourning, the album contains considerable divine-spiritual energy; I think the group has truly captured the essence of transcendence in this mix. The ethereal combination of soulful lyrics, powerful instrumentals, and captivating melodies creates an immersive experience that resonates with listeners on a profound level.

As you listen to Portraits, you’ll find that QOC has crafted a collection of songs that not only entertain, but also inspire introspection. Their poignant lyrics and emotive performance invite fans to reflect on life’s uncertainties, making the album a cathartic journey of self-discovery.
