Lauren Spencer Smith Talks Debut Album ‘Mirror’.

Written by Sammy Wrogé

The Vancouver native, multi-platinum singer/songwriter, Lauren Spencer Smith, released her long awaited 15-track debut album, Mirror, on July 14th . An album that tells us all about who Lauren is from when she wrote the first song on the album at the age of 16 up until her current self as an almost 20-year-old.

Lauren Spencer Smith is well known for her vulnerability through her personable songs that create a safe haven and sense of familiarity. Relatable songs, such as “Fingers Crossed” and “Flowers” are perfect examples.

Prior to the release of her debut album, she had already released, “Best Friend Breakup” and “Fantasy”.

When asked what the inspiration behind Mirror was, Lauren shared that it pulls from her various relationships.

“…my life trauma as it stands, breakups, a lot of best friend breakups. Really just the falling out

of relationships and how difficult relationships are to navigate and lose and join again,” says Lauren Spencer Smith

The back half of her album is about her current boyfriend who she was so scared to fall in love with because it meant letting someone in again. A perfect tie into her last track, “Do It All Again,” which leaves listeners with a big twist and allude to her hit song, “Fingers Crossed.” On the other hand, the first half of her album is all about falling out of love with someone, a breakup, losing trust, and having no boundaries.

With an album that was three years in the making, Lauren feels as though she does not relate to her songs on the album as she once did being that she is in a happy and healthy relationship. However, she finds herself still dealing with the messages portrayed in her songs “Bigger Person” and “28”.

“I was even at like rehearsals last week and they started playing ‘Bigger Person’. I was like, ‘I’m gonna cry guys,’” says Lauren Spencer Smith when talking about how “Bigger Person” still leaves her feeling like she could cry each time she hears it.

Mirror is an album that is said to reveal more to listeners about themselves and Lauren is looking forward to sharing her debut album on tour and having her best friend, Geena Fontanella — who was a huge help in creating this album — join as one of her three openers.
