Interview with The Lightning Kids.

Formed during lockdown 2021, The Lightning Kids are composed of singer-songwriter Emma Ballantine, guitarist/producer Darryn McHardie (aka Cinematix 1993) and songwriter/producer Jonny Spalding. With only a few releases under their belt, they are already described as ‘the Retrowave London Grammar’. They just returned with a new version of one of their hit tracks “All Those Nights - Santa Monica Remix” taken from their debut album.

How did The Lightning Kids come to be?
We formed virtually in 2021, after songwriter Jonny reached out to long-term collaborator and singer-songwriter Emma and guitarist, Darryn, on instagram. After a few months of organic writing demo’s, the band formed when singing a record and publishing deal with synthwave label, Aztec Records.
Who are your main influences?
Many influences, ranging from synthwave/retrowave icons such as Kavinsky to great British pop duo Pet Shop boys and the California-sounding 80’s soft-rock of Fleetwood Mac.
How does it feel to be described as ‘the Retrowave London Grammar’?
We are honoured to be included in the retrowave/synthwave community and also to be compared to such an incredible act as London Grammar.
You've just released a new version (Santa Monica Mix) of your debut album track "All Those Nights", what's different with this rendition?
The new single is built on the album version, which is a short interlude track with only vocals and synth pads. The new recording is a fully fledged pop record including new vocals, guitars and full Lightning Kids treatment!
What can you tell us about your music plans for 2023?
A busy year following our debut album we are working on a remix project, a few collaborators and some brand new music at the end of the year!
