Baby Rose Releases ‘Through and Through’.

Written by Eva Lynch

With her smooth and sultry tone, Washington-born R&B singer Baby Rose immediately caught people’s attention with the release of her debut independent project To Myself in 2019. Her latest album Through and Through came out last month and it has been on repeat in my household. Her long anticipated-follow up to To Myself, and first music since partnering with the label Secretly Canadian, showcases her growth and power when it comes to songwriting,
singing, and producing; as her vision is executed so clearly and with such intention and balance, as you are set afloat by her captivating and smoldering voice. Despite initially being bullied for her lower register when she was younger, Rose became inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Janis Joplin to start singing and play with the power of her voice and its range.

Through and Through is a mixture of soulful and vulnerable melodies, which highlight the raspy quality of her voice and play it up through layered vocals and backing choirs, intermixed with emotional yet fun and fast songs which get you up and dancing. It brings the energy and boasts a number of collaborations with other R&B artists such as Georgia Anne Muldrow and Smino. Her cinematic sound has been used in many film soundtracks already, having created music for the Creed soundtrack and Issa Rae’s Insecure. The album and its whimsical almost-psychedelic
nature was perfectly captured by Pitchfork when writer Emma Madden said it “lives in the swimmy non-existence of lost futures.” It dwells in the space between the past and future, reality and fantasy, while somehow staying grounded grounded by her deep and round vocals, and I’m sure the hopeless and directionless she expresses through her songs is something that resonates with us all.

There are very few like Baby Rose; if you’re looking for a rich voice to get lost in, check out this
new album. Here are some of our favorites from the album…

If you’re looking for something hypnotic and more experimental: Power

If you’re looking for something nostalgic: Tell Me It’s Real

If you’re looking for something energetic: I Won’t Tell

If you’re looking for something smooth R&B: Go
