Alex Hughes Releases “Tee Time”.
Written by: Julia Jade
Oh my god. “Tee Time’” by Alex Hughes is taking me back to my days living in Nashville, freshly out of college, knowing no one in the city but going out every night to hear live music.
Born and raised in Calgary, AB, Alex spent her time during the pandemic developing as an artist and honing her craft, co-writing over 50 songs with writers from Calgary, Nashville, Chicago, and even the UK; and also began diving into the world of production.
You can hear this level of experience in her craft— Hughes has masterfully written a song that I’m not sure has been written from quite this perspective before. A love song taking place on a golf course: “You’re hard to resist, but you swing and you miss, ‘cause there’s one thing on your mind.” The mark of a truly talented songwriter can be found in lyrics like this— the internal rhymes and the very clever, cheeky metaphors make this song a slam dunk... (a hole in one? It’s about golf after all...)
The guitar motifs in this song are nostalgic and charming, slightly mirroring Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ melody but also bringing their own spin, originality, and adding some flair and personality to the instrumentation that fills a room. Hughes’s vocals are crispy and the clean, satisfying harmonies make this song undeniable ear candy. It’s the kind of song that makes folks who don’t like country, like country! A great song is a great song and Alex Hughes has brought us a danceable song with heart and wit. Stream “Tee Time” by Alex Hughes now, later, and then again after that.
