Interview With Adam Melchor.
Interview by: Sarah Evangelista
Happy new year! What’s your main goal as an artist this year?
My absolute main goal is to get on stage in front of human beings and play the songs that make my heart soar. I’m never taking live music for granted again. I truly miss the connection to my fans in real life and that is the only prize I have my eye on for this year; just to get safely back on stage.
Being raised by music teachers, you really grew up with music. What’s your fondest musical memory?
My fondest musical memory is simply my childhood. Every party and function, there was a gathering around a piano, a picking up of a guitar, and just a whole lot of dancing and smiling. I think the latest fond memory that I keep on holding onto is the last time I played a big show in NYC and my whole family was there to see it. Seeing my grandma in Terminal 5 while playing to a sold-out crowd was just an insane thing.
You’ve written with a number of talented artists, do you find yourself coming up with more ideas by yourself or while working with other people?
If I’m writing for my artist project, I usually always come up with an idea to bring to the table and when the session is for someone else, I let them take the lead. It’s equally fun to be the conductor as it is the passenger in sessions.
You started the lullaby hotline in February, how did you come up with the idea, and did you think it would last this long? We’re almost at the 50th week!
So usually during the year when I’m not touring, I’m writing. When I write, i usually do it 4-5 times a week, so naturally, I have ALOT of songs. Some are more thought out than others, and some are obviously singles and some are obviously not. This was sort of a way to get these songs out in a way where I could also connect with my fans. Then when this pandemic started, it became my only outlet without shows and not knowing when I was gonna release something officially. CRAZY that it’s almost at week 50 it feels like just yesterday I was announcing this haha.
“Last Time” was released previously & the song is so ironic right now with the pandemic and everything, what feelings do you hope to give listeners with this song?
I hope it gives them a sense of familiarity and also a “you’re not alone when you’re alone” perspective. The world has always been the most insane and this year is no exception. I didn’t write it as a pandemic song, but somehow it applies so well. It’s a strange thing that it applies so well to pre and post-pandemic life. I just hope people can find comfort in it.
Within the first few seconds of the song, there’s this recording that sounds like you could almost play it in reverse and it would say something, is that intentional? I love that!
There’s nothing I love more than reversing sounds and vocals. There's such a beauty in it that is only created by reversing what you're singing. Somehow it makes everything more emotional.
You’ve been releasing so many tunes lately, could we expect an EP or album soon?
I’m putting out a mixtape called Melchor Lullaby Hotline Volume 1 hopefully by the end of March, sort of a highlight reel of songs that have been out on the hotline this year.
Our music website is all about up and coming artists, would you like to give a shout out to your favorites at the moment?
I just worked with a girl named Biig Piig today who is so epic, everyone should check her out.
